The Rise of Online DVD Rental
In March 2006 I launched the UK DVD Rental Guide Website. The website is devoted to providing independent advice, reviews and rankings of the major providers of online DVD rental service in the UK. The idea for the website originated from my passion for DVD’s and from the difficulty of choosing the right online DVD rental service.
Online DVD rental is slowly but surely making its mark on the entertainment industry and is a powerful rival for its traditional highstreet alternative. The phenomenon of online DVD rental may ultimately replace the traditional form of DVD rental!
Since its launch, the website has evolved to where it is today. It sets out each of the major providers of online DVD Rental services, the prices, the package options, the number of titles available and any free trial that is offered. Each service provider is rated against predifined criteria and then ranked against each other. We continually check for changes in the services and re-rate and re-rank accordingly.
Here’s why we think online DVD Rental is Better:
• Cheaper. The prices for online rental are much cheaper than the highstreet alternative.
• Convenient. No need to go out to the store. Just browse and select titles online from the comfort of your own home and they appear in the post. Postage is FREE both ways.
• No Due Dates. There are no dates by which you have to return the DVD’s. Keep them as long as you like!
• No late return charges. Watch your DVD’s without fear of a charge for late return. There’s no late return charges - EVER!
• More to choose from. With upto 57,000 titles there’s more DVD’s to choose from than you can shake a stick at.
• Completely Risk Free Trial. Most of the DVD rental companies let you try before you sign-up. It costs absolutely nothing and there are no hidden charges.
We hope you enjoy the UK DVD Rental Guide and it helps you choose the best service for your needs. We will keep testing and will make sure the guide is comprehensive, up to date and continues to ensure it provides independent advice.
The Simpsons (DVD) Re-examine
Starting with the greatly pre-eminent chapter (airing December 17, 1989), The Simpsons (Condition 1) DVD is packed with some of the best episodes in the usher’s history. All of these break of dawn episodes betray a trace of amateurish (past later Simpson standards) fire, seeing as how the popularity of the elucidate had hitherto to land it the cyclopean budgets of successive years. How, this does not swipe away from the clarify’s acerbic wit which is remaining and in full fluctuation from one end to the other all thirteen of the starting episodes.
A infrequent details do take the side of out. Homer’s make known is slightly distinguishable, and he isn’t as thick as his hieroglyph is later portrayed to be. But all the other Simpson relatives members are steadfastly established from the get-go. These introductory episodes witness the appearance of such treasured supporting characters as Krusty the Provincial, Ned Flanders, Itchy & Scratchy (although they’re only cartoons!), Monty Burns & sidekick Wayland Smithers, Patty & Selma, Martin Prince, Grandpa Simpson, Reverend Lovejoy, and a host of other approvingly regarded inhabitants of Springfield who comprise climbed their character into the hearts of America since the show’s debut.
As the longest running enthusiastic show in recapitulation, and the longest event prime-time show of any fount, The Simpsons is an American cash – a bloc of humor, joking, and satire that examines not justified the lives of its eccentric characters, but also the organization, way of life, and area in which we live. Pastime for adults and children showing, The Simpsons is a sarcastic peevish tube comedy that, like Seinfeld, altered the telly aspect in the 1990’s nearby dictating a unheard of genre of TV fun that spawned network investment in untrained passionate series such as Ruler of the Hill, Futurama, and The Parentage Guy.
Like all new things which smash the paradigm of viability, The Simpsons is unrivaled close its knockoffs, and the make an appearance doesn’t show signs of slowing down. If you haven’t until now visited Springfield, then I categorically suggest you pick up The Simpsons (Season 1) DVD to involve a glimpse pro yourself. You tease no idea what you’ve been missing…
The Simpsons DVD offers a hundred of jolly episodes including the series opening night “Simpsons Roasting On An Unestablished Flames” in which Homer’s shot at to work a defective province in order to take the family a great Christmas ends in utter failure. 24 (DVD) Review
First airing in November 2001, 24 quickly established itself as one of the best television series around and solidified itself as a cult classic icon. Utilizing a novel premise, each season of 24 comprises a single day in lives of its characters, with each of the 24 episodes representing a one-hour time segment of that day. Kiefer Sutherland stars in the imminent role of Jack Bauer, a government agent periodically faced with enormous challenges within a single day. Each season is reminiscent of a fast-paced Hollywood action thriller, but it’s only a busy day in the life of the heroic Bauer…
Season 1 unfolds in Los Angeles during the California presidential primary as CIA agent Jack Bauer and his colleagues uncover a murderous plot to assassinate front-running candidate David Palmer. With only 24 hours to uncover the identity of the determined killer, Jack must race against the clock if he has any hope of thwarting the plot. Meanwhile, Jack is distracted by his crumbling marriage and the disappearance of his rebellious teenage daughter. The clock is ticking… Can Jack save the man who may become president? And can he do so while keeping his family intact?
The 24 DVD features a number of breathtaking episodes including the season premiere in which the groundwork for the series and the season is laid. South Park (DVD) Review
Premiering in the late summer of 1997, South Park took American pop culture by storm with its no-holds-barred examination of social and political issues and its lewd yet unique brand of cartoon humor. Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, South Park is the lynchpin of cable network Comedy Central’s original programming lineup. Centered around the lives of several kids in the small Colorado town of South Park (a place prone to odd and paranormal occurrences), the series presents itself in the form of crude animated drawings, yet the concept works, playing home to innumerable well-written shows filled with boundless wit, well-timed one-liners, and an endless array of politically-incorrect humor. Love it or hate it, South Park is a truly original animated series with relentlessly off-the-wall plot twists and comic relief. If you love oddball humor, then this is the show for you…
South Park mostly follows the exploits of four elementary school kids - Cartman (who’s overweight and sarcastic), Kyle (who dreams of eliminating his little brother Ike), Stan (who throws up at the sight of a girl he likes), and Kenny (who manages to get killed in every episode). All four attend South Park Elementary School where third grade teacher Mr. Garrison educates them with the use of a hand-puppet named “Mr. Hat” and cafeteria employee “Chef” McElroy (Isaac Hayes) dispenses his advice while periodically breaking into 70’s love songs about making love to women. South Park is the setting for numerous oddities such as alien visitors, a monster with a hand of celery and the leg of Patrick Duffy, and Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride. South Park also hosts a number famous people from time to time, such as the Devil, Saddam Hussein, the Antichrist, Kathy Lee Gifford, Scott Baio, Tina Yothers, Elton John, and Jesus Christ - who has his own cable access show…
The South Park DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere “Cartman Gets an Anal Probe” in which Kyle tries to rid himself of his baby brother Ike by playing a game of “kick the baby” at the bus stop. Meanwhile, Cartman reveals to his friends that he had a nightmare in which he was abducted by aliens, leading Stan, Kyle, and Chef to the conclusion that aliens inserted an anal probe in Cartman. As cows are mutilated in South Park, Cartman continues to live in denial of the alien machine residing in his anus… Other notable episodes from Season 1 include “An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig” in which Kyle’s science project to cross-breed an elephant with a pig is made possible when Chef and Elton John create the necessary atmosphere for proper loving-making, and “Pink Eye” in which Kenny dies early in the episode but is turned into a zombie by accident…

ER (DVD) Review
Nominated for 25 Golden Globes and 110 Emmys, including 7 for Outstanding Drama Series, ER has long been one of the best prime-time shows on television. Premiering in September 1994 on NBC, the hour-long hospital drama vividly illustrates the intensity and fast-paced stress endemic to hospital emergency rooms across America. Brought into being by Michael Crichton - famous Hollywood insider, novelist, and brains behind such films as Jurassic Park, Twister, and Timeline - ER fulfills its creator’s ultimate vision (it took over a decade of pitching the show before network executives bit) for a close-to-life glimpse of the technology and the humanity omnipresent in the ER. Since its inception, many cast members have passed through the halls of ER, many of them having gone on to become big stars in Hollywood…
ER follows the exploits of a group of emergency room staff who work in a busy Chicago hospital. The show attempts to examine every detail of the ER experience. From the exhilaration of saving a life to the tedium caused by mountains of paperwork, all the highs and lows are covered. In the show’s first year, a number of regular faces staffed the ER. Doctors Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards), Peter Benton (Eriq La Salle), Douglas Ross (George Clooney), and Susan Lewis (Sherri Stringfield) were regulars in the ER along with Head Nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) and Benton’s medical student understudy (and later ER doctor), John Carter (Noah Wyle)… Any given episode tends to run multiple plot lines throughout the show, interweaving scenes in short snippets intended to heighten audience emotion and create the aura of a stress-laden atmosphere. The show’s high drama, coupled with subplots of the staffers’ personal lives and the display of cutting edge medical technology, combine to make ER one of most adrenaline-inducing programs in television history…
The ER DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the series premiere “24 Hours” in which a long day in the ER is made longer when multiple casualties pour through the doors following the collapse of a building and medical students report for training (marking the first appearance for John Carter’s character). Meanwhile, Dr. Benton performs a heart surgery normally reserved only for senior staff members while the staff is struck with a personal tragedy when Head Nurse Carol Hathaway is brought in following a suicide attempt… Other notable episodes from Season 1 include “Blizzard” in which a major snowstorm first leads to an empty ER and then (following a 40-car pileup) one with overflowing capacity, and “House of Cards” in which, while trying to keep up with Carter, Deb nearly causes a patient’s death…
Below is a list of episodes included on the ER (Season 1) DVD:

Same old, and brand new, DVD talk!
The war is everywhere. Not the Iraq war, but the heated battle between the HD-DVD and the Blu-Ray formats. The rising interest in that war, though needed to steer the industry in the right direction in the near future, is causing the market to miss out on present opportunities, of less than ideally explored features of DVD products.
Without the war, the industry already boasts a vast pool of products to offer consumers. Thus, ink and space in this review will focus on those under-used functions of the DVD, especially the creative concept of DVD editing and morphing.
The search phrase of “DVD morpher” on Yahoo! returns 201 000 results, with the top 3 all on Avnex’s product of DVD Player &ndash Morpher. DVD morphing is not too new. However, probably not many of us know how to “morph” DVD, though few are unaware of DVD music and pictures. DVD morphing is a concept of creative self-exploration in the high-end world of the visibles and the audibles: users can not only enjoy unmatched picture and sound quality, but also enhance the displayed image as well as modify what they hear with special effects, all to their best imagination. The “morph” tools duly refresh the developed concept of a personal entertainment experience. And with products such as the AV DVD Player-Morpher Gold’s 44 video and audio effects in various combinations, your experience could truly be personal.
Currently, there should be 8 major players in this market, with various levels of products going for as low as $30. The more expensive packages are perhaps the most value-for-money, offering complete tools to define your DVD experience the way you wish to: the above-mentioned 44 cool effects and so much more of the AV Morpher could be yours for $99.95. Such low prices could lead to a boom in the number of “morphers”, when users become more demanding of their players for features such as capturing crystal-clear digital images, converting those pictures into video format and recording and burning their own versions of movies.
Little does an average movie lover know that he can now easily possess such powerful tools to personalize his favourite hits, as the 8 producers are continuously expanding their sales and distribution networks, expecting sales figures to sky-rocket as much as the DVD boom of the past 7 years. Packages are getting more and more complete; users could produce a fully personalized movie disc, from picture enhancement to audio modifications and even to label printing. Yes, these convenient DVD players are increasingly allowing you such level of personalization; you could get rid of the usually bare disc cover and have your family’s pictures in the pack of Home Alone II. At the moment, however, it seems that few producers offer this cover creation feature, with the rare exception of Media Morpher.
In view of the attractive prices and packages, with possibilities to go “even lower and more complete in the future”, according to industry gurus, the market is going to be poised to boom. The question is not when, but how much. This defining edge of the DVD industry could help continue the boom of the fast-growing consumer goods. So, it’s time to get away from the tech-war between the over-mentioned Sony and Toshiba, and bring it on with the evolving products of the under-noticed Media Morpher and ULead Systems.
Gilmore Girls (DVD) Review
Nominated for 1 Emmy and 1 Golden Globe in its first five seasons, Gilmore Girls has experienced much greater success among TV viewers than among industry critics. In fact, the show is the first script supported by the Family Friendly Forum’s script development fund to go on and become a regular television series. Part of an initiative between The WB Network - maker of such hits as Dawson’s Creek (1998), Felicity (1998), Angel (1999), and Smallville (2001) - and fellow industry executives, this push for more family-oriented programming resulted in a series showcasing a unique mother-daughter bond and the various people they encounter on their life voyage of discovery. Set in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, Gilmore Girls utilizes many of the same sets as the hit series The Dukes Of Hazzard (1979) - another successful Warner Brothers production from years past…
Gilmore Girls is set in a small idyllic community in Connecticut filled with a wide range of diverse characters and eccentric personalities. Against this backdrop, Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) attempts to raise her daughter and best friend, Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel), to carve out a better life for herself. Having made a number of youthful mistakes, Lorelai made the decision to raise her daughter by herself at a young age (the same age as Rory when the series begins), and she’s bound and determined to make sure that Rory makes better decisions for herself. As Rory prepares to go off to college, she displays many of the same likes and dislikes as her mother - especially when it comes to the opposite sex, and that’s what worries Lorelai the most… A borderline soap opera, Gilmore Girls is more of a serial drama that focuses on the love, friendship, and shared growth of a mother and daughter as they live out their dreams in modern day America…
The Gilmore Girls DVD features a number of touching episodes including the series premiere in which Rory is accepted to a very prestigious prep school named Chilton. But Lorelai struggles to come up with the tuition money necessary to send her, so she contacts her estranged parents for a loan. They agree to provide Rory with the tuition if Lorelai will agree to have a family dinner with them every Friday. Meanwhile, Rory has developed a crush on a recent transfer student, making her apprehensive about attending Chilton. When Lorelai finds out that a boy is the source of Rory’s uncertainty, the two get in a fight with Lorelai fearing that Rory will follow in her own path of bad decisions. However, after the family dinner with Lorelai’s parents, Rory realizes the sacrifice her mother has made in asking for the loan, and the two make up… Other notable episodes from Season 1 include “Forgiveness and Stuff” in which a feuding Rory and Lorelai settle their differences just in time for Christmas, and “The Third Lorelai” in which Emily opposes her mother-in-law’s offer to set up a trust fund for Rory because she’s afraid it will mean an end to her contact with her granddaughter…

Shopping For DVD Movies
Technology has taken us from Beta to VHS and now to DVD movies. With each new step of technology, the pictures became more clear, the sound more defined and an improved experience overall. However, nothing has matched the quality of DVD movies. With crystal clear images, incomparable sounds and tons of added features, DVD movies are a hit.
Gone are the days when a movie rental was just a movie. These days, a DVD rental includes not only the movie, but also deleted scenes, cast interviews, commentary and often even a documentary on how the film was made. Video store rentals are excellent, but what if you don’t have a local rental store? No problem. Several big name retailers offer online rentals, which means that a video store is now just a click away. For a monthly fee, online rental companies will allow you to create a wish list of DVD movies that you want to see. They will send a movie from your list and, after you watch it, it is returned in exchange for another selection on your list. This process goes on and on without any additional cost to the customer. The only thing you pay for is a monthly membership fee. So, whether it’s online or in person, a video store is a terrific place to rent Hollywood’s latest hit movies.
If you are looking to purchase a video, the options are equally unlimited. Virtually every retail store has an electronic section in which they offer DVD movies for sale. The new releases are generally more expensive than others so, if you’re on a budget, check out the titles that have been released for a year or longer. You may be surprised at the bargains to be found. Another purchasing option is through a video club. With this type of membership, you simply sign up and select several movies at an unbelievable low price. In exchange for the bargain, you agree to purchase a predetermined number of movies over the next several years. Each month, the video club will send a video catalog and selection card. Be sure to read the selection card carefully because you may have to return it to the company. Typically, a director’s selection is chosen every month and is automatically sent to the customer unless they indicate they do not wish to receive it. A customer can indicate that they do not wish to receive this selection simply by marking the appropriate box on the selection card and mailing it back. Or, often times, customers may indicate their wishes online without having to spend money on postage to mail the selection card back.
